History

Wilderness was was created on September 14, 1964, by the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church to make a camping and retreat center in the northwest part of the state. In September 2014, the Missouri UMC announced the intention to sell its four camping and retreat ministries facilities as part of the new direction for camping.

On October 21, 2015, the Wilderness Camping and Retreat Association (WCRA) won the bid at the auction of the camping and retreat ministries facilities. On December 1, 2015, we officially took possession of the property.

Wilderness Camping and Retreat Center is now open for user groups of all kinds and will also provide summer camp opportunities for children and youth.
